UPDATE:

Underwater Halloween Pumpkin Carving, Costumes and Implosion

The current at Ten Mile Point was dead quiet for over 3 hours which made for the perfect conditions to carve a pumpkin and go for a dive at Victoria's best shore site. Several divers carved (or "butchered") their pumpkin into all sorts of creations ranging from octopuses and fish to wolves. James and Parker won the prize for best pumpkin with a two sided pumpkin featuring a wolf and a very angry looking face to go along with sea stars on each side. Mitch won the costume prize with his "tank whale" set up. What depth will a pumpkin implode? At the event we took a pumpkin down to depth followed by two video cameras. At 18.4m the pumpkin imploded. Video coming soon. Check out pictures and video from the event below!

1st Annual Underwater Crush and Carve Halloween Hullabaloo
October 31st, 2014
One great night with three challenges, BBQ and prizes!

Picture
This year Halloween is combined with an excellent slack tide for Ten Mile Point!  UVic Scuba will be teaming up with Rockfish Divers to throw a fun night of Halloween diving, underwater pumpkin carving and costume contest.  Here's the plan:

Meeting time at McKinnon Gym:  6:00pm - at the big blue doors adjacent to parking lot 2
Minimum Training:  Advanced with night experience
Cost:  Minimum $10 donation which will get you:
  • a pumpkin to carve underwater;
  • hot dog or veggie dog or smokie, drinks and cupcakes;
  • all proceeds will go to Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Program;
  • special Halloween equipment rental price w/ tank: $25

Details:  Divers are responsible for their personal dive kit, including lights - all of which is included in the special rental price, however, we do not include a proper safe dive knife you carve your pumpkin with. Please register here to reserve your spot. If you do not register we will not have a pumpkin for you to carve. There are three opportunities for prizes:

Challenge One: Best Pumpkin Carved Underwater
Rules:
  • A pumpkin will be supplied for all divers registered for this event;
  • All carvers will be in buddy teams (if you don't have a buddy - we'll find one for you!);
  • Divers must bring their own carving tools;
  • Divers are responsible for the buoyancy control of their pumpkin (i.e. bring an extra weight or a big rock; 5 lbs minimum recommended);
  • Glow sticks will be supplied;
  • A judge will make the final decision.

Challenge Two: Best Dive Hood Costume
Rules:
  • Must be safe including no entanglement hazards;
  • Must be environmentally friendly (anemones don't appreciate glitter!);
  • A judge will make the final decision.
  • Disclaimer - we are not responsible for fatally modified hoods!

Challenge Three: What depth does a pumpkin implode?

It won't be just ANY pumpkin - Rockfish Divers will display "The Smashing Pumpkin" at the shop in Brentwood Bay up until Halloween when the pumpkin will be taken to depth under video surveillance. Up until midnight on October 30, 2014, online entries by divers and non-divers can be submitted with your assumption how the weight and size of the pumpkin will affect the Implosion. Or, just make a wild guess!Complete the online entry below with your best guess for implosion depth to the nearest metric decimal (i.e. 10.3m). One entry per person please, and entrants must join these Halloween festivities to be eligible for their prize. If multiple entrants share the closest guess, the best carved pumpkin of the two will prevail as the expert Implodeologist.
